9 Things That Happen Between Ordering a Flat-Pack Kitchen and Actually Cooking In It

Ordering a flat-pack kitchen feels like the hard part is over. You’ve picked the units, chosen the doors, worked out roughly where the sink is going, and paid. Job done, right? Not quite. Between the order confirmation email and the first meal cooked in a finished kitchen, there’s a sequence of stages that most people never think about until they’re living through them — usually with boxes stacked in the hallway and no idea what happens next.

It’s not that the process is complicated — it’s that almost none of it happens in the showroom, on the website, or in the delivery van. It happens on site, over several days, in a sequence that has very little to do with the order you clicked “confirm” on. Understanding that sequence in advance is the difference between a smooth week and a kitchen that sits half-finished while parts, trades and schedules catch up with each other.

Here’s what actually fills that gap.

1. The order is just the starting point, not the plan

A flat-pack order gives you units, doors and a list of parts. It doesn’t give you a sequence, a survey of your walls, or confirmation that your existing plumbing sits where the new sink needs it. Anyone who has watched a kitchen fitted knows that the gap between “kitchen ordered” and “kitchen fitted” is where the real planning happens. 2. Delivery day is a quality-control checkpoint

Flat-pack deliveries are large — dozens of boxes, some heavy, some awkward, all needing to be checked against the original plan. Missing panels, the wrong door style, or a damaged worktop end are far easier to sort out on delivery day than halfway through installation, when a missing part can stall the whole job for a week while a replacement is ordered. Having someone on site who knows exactly what should have arrived, and in what quantity, is worth far more on this one day than it sounds.

3. Walls and floors get assessed before a single unit goes up

Older properties rarely have perfectly straight walls or level floors. This is the stage where an installer works out what needs building up, packing out, or reinforcing before cabinets go anywhere near it. Skip this step and every unit that follows inherits the same lean, and no amount of careful assembly further down the line will correct it. It’s also the point where anything structural — a stud wall in the wrong place, a boxed-in pipe that needs moving — gets flagged, rather than discovered halfway through fitting the units.

4. First fix work happens before the kitchen shows any progress

Pipework needs to be roughly in position before base units go in. Electrical circuits for ovens, hobs and extractors need to be run to the right places. None of this is visible in the finished kitchen, which is exactly why it’s easy to underestimate — and exactly why getting it wrong is expensive to unpick later.

5. Units are assembled and levelled, not just bolted together

This is where flat-pack carcasses stop being cardboard boxes and start becoming a kitchen. Every cabinet has to be levelled individually and fixed securely to the wall — uneven units now mean doors that won’t hang straight and drawers that catch, long after the kitchen looks finished from a distance.

6. Worktops are measured after the cabinets are fixed, not before

This catches a lot of people out. Worktops — laminate, stone or solid wood — are templated once the base units are permanently in position, because even a few millimetres of movement changes the cut. Ordering worktops before installation starts, based on the original plan rather than the actual fitted cabinets, is one of the more common ways a kitchen ends up with visible gaps at the joins.

7. Appliances get integrated, connected and tested — not just slotted in

Ovens, hobs, extractors, dishwashers and integrated fridge-freezers all need to sit flush, connect correctly, and actually work before anyone calls the job finished. This is also where the difference between assembling a kitchen and properly installing one becomes obvious. 8. Gas and electrical work gets signed off, not just switched on

This isn’t a box-ticking formality — it’s what makes the kitchen safe to actually use, and it’s the stage that gets skipped most often when a job is being done to save money rather than done properly.

9. Snagging happens before anyone calls it finished

The last stage is the one that separates a kitchen that looks done from one that actually is. Door alignment, drawer adjustment, plinth and cornice fitting, silicone joints, and a full walkthrough — checking every appliance, every hinge, every join — all happen here. It’s unglamorous, it takes longer than people expect, and skipping it is exactly how small issues turn into six-month niggles.

The gap between ordering and cooking

None of these stages are visible when you’re browsing kitchen units online, which is exactly why the gap between “ordered” and “finished” catches so many people out. Flat-pack brands are genuinely good at what they do — well-engineered carcasses at prices a bespoke showroom kitchen can’t touch. What they don’t do is the sequencing, the levelling, the first fix, or the snagging. That part still comes down to whoever is standing in the kitchen with a spirit level, and it’s worth thinking about who that will be before the boxes are delivered rather than after.
